Lyrical content

Lately in lesson we have been analysing our musical content and have been sharing our information amongst our groups, thinking of ways in which we can find a medium between us and converge our ideas in order to translate our ideas successfully.

We do this by highlighting elements of the lyrics section by section and try to create a narrative structure so it allows our video to make sense and not be completely filled with metaphorical concepts which the audience may not be able to relate to.

Editing skills

In today’s lesson, we were able to use the editing software which was good as it allowed us to learn the various techniques such as cross fades, cut and transition effects. We also learnt how to change the colour contract on various clips which is an effect way in changing the presence of clip which we may incorporate into our musical video. The importance of syncing the music with the sound allows us to ensure the quality is good. It also  allows us to time the music right so it does not gives us the bad quality effect of out of sync lyrics

Permission for Copyright

(Fact sheet P-07: Music Copyright)
There are principally 2 types of copyright to consider when we talk about music copyright.
  • The traditional ©, ‘C in a circle’ copyright, applies to the composition, musical score, lyrics, as well as any artwork or cover designs, as all of these are individually subject to copyright in their own rights, (though when you register, you can include them all in a single registration provided they have the same copyright owner(s)).
  • The second type of copyright applies to the sound recording itself, and is signified by the ‘P in a circle’
When using the work of others you have to ensure that you get permission to use the work before you attempt to publish or sell your work. Similarly, if you use loops or samples available via sample collections etc. ensure that these are licensed as free to use, or obtain permission . This is the reason we sent an email out to the company asking for permission to use their tack although my group will not be selling any copies, we are using their lyrical content and instrumental which is the reason we asked for permission.

Music Video Pitch/ Feedback

Feedback;

My group found this video feedback section useful as we we're able to gather opinions from other media students, which allowed us to listen to constructive criticism and make adjustments on the elements of our music video which may not be clear to the audience.

They also gave us suggestions for shoots such as brick lane, they believe as it’s a urban environment it correlates well to the genre of our music and would allow us to create and urban tone and portray to the audience our genre of music. Other suggestion we also received were train stations and abandon houses which they believe merged well with slow tempo’d instrumental.

They were uncertain with theme of our video; we explain it will be a performance based video with elements of clips throughout, while following a narrative structure in order to portray our abstract ideas of how we translate the lyrical content into a visual peace.

 They said we do not need a studio and using a derelict area would suit the context of our video more appropriately as it would allow us to create an urban tone as it relates better to our genre of alternative hip hop. This will allow us to express our abstract concepts to the audience and enable us to be more creative with our preparation when brainstorming the different sections of our video.

They didn’t understand the reference we stated regarding the Ku Klux Klan, basically during our preparation we looked at various videos and how they appeal to the audience.  One of the videos watched was the Kanye west black skin head video where the beginning scene was shot with a blackout Ku Klux Klan outfit. The idea of building tension through the first scene and be able to grasp the audience attention, I found was significant compare to other videos and is a method I would look to incorporate into our video.
